Workflow 101
September 1, 2009Workflow is a fancy word thrown around perhaps two seperate words but for me its one, used lots in the world of Photographers and when you first start out, it sounds complicated and too technical so you go on pretending you know exactly what every one is talking about, nodding your head smiling and saying me too, and oh yes. You are afraid to ask as if you are the only one who does not get it because after all the word itself should explain what it is right? Not Exactly at least not for me, it was not until my internship that I fully understood what workflow was and oh it is not complicated at all once you understand what it is and what is your own workflow. Basically workflow is all the steps of action involved in your business or work. For us photographers it is all the steps needed to finish all work for a particular client. There is no right or wrong on what you include in your steps but it must be from beginning to end. For wedding photography, usually first step is the client meeting, then all the other steps involved in the work with that client. So if it is a wedding, second step might be signing the contract, then third E-session then importing pictures, editing them, color correcting, exporting, online galleries, client viewing up to final album or print or what ever your final step is. For me who has done more Lifestyle Portrait work, my first step is the actual shoot then I listed all the steps needed to fully say I am done with that work for that client. What ever editing software that you use be it Lightroom, Bridge, Photo Shop, etc will affect your workflow, if you are shooting in raw versus jpeg or if you do your own album design, all of that goes into your workflow because it is the steps needed to fully complete that work. This has helped me lots for it is my guide to get my to do list done faster and to get the work done faster because in working from home, it is hard to have self discipline and the reason I am writing this post is because I have neglected my workflow, skipping steps, being impatient posting pixs up too soon and thus causing my workflow to slow down my work and since I have established September as organization, health conscious month, I need to get back on track. So bear with me with many posts or reposts with the slideshows which I should have included in my posts cause I skipped a few steps. I hope this helps any one who also was unsure of what workflow is OR just confirms your thoughts and aids you in writing your own steps so you are more in control of your business. I suggest you type it up or write in on a work board or if you use some kind of to do list tool so you can keep checking it and moving on so you can go to next client or do other things for your business like be in the look out for two great photographers coming to NY city, One is Tofurious in his coffee tour talks about SEO and the other is the Fast Track Photographer Workshop with Dane Sanders coming to the NY Road Show in October ( contest for Fast Track Photographer Audio Book coming soon). And photographers please feel free to add any more input or tips for workflo. And since every post really needs a picture and I am behind with my stuff, here is the SLIDESHOW*** from Asafe’s last session ( I thought I would put this up since I did this month’s already so catching up for sure) and here is sneak peak of this month photo shoot of Asafe who is now 5 months.
So I had to update this post with a video I found today through Jules Bianchi and it was from Michale Corsentino and all about Workflow and I see he has great posts every week on making our lives as photographers much easier. I am so humbled that I had an issue with my lightroom today and emailed Jules for help and guess who called me? Michal! Do nice photographers like these really exist? oh you bet they do and that is why they are masters at what the do- inspiring others. Check it out.
